Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge with Intel Perceptual Computing SDK Overview
Intel is out with Perceptual Computing SDK which works with Creative Gesture Camera. It is a new way of Human machine Interaction through Gestures, Head Tracking, Object Tracking. The SDK is in beta 3 stage. However it already has started showing a lot of promise and getting accepted widely.

First Perceptual Computing Challenge was also concluded a couple of week back with great Prototypes being build by great minds. Days are not far when every home will be a Tony Stark Home or every office will operate in Minority Report style.

I, being one of the participant in the Contest take this privilege to summerize some of the works that I found interesting.

Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge Gaming Entries with Gesture
Perceptual Computing is always linked to great gaming experience and no wonder that we saw a lot of games were built with the same. Games included replacing game controllers with gestures to head tracking to intuitive mix of different modality. We found many games quite interesting. However the games that looks complete and presents a good gaming experience beside perceptual experience are the ones that stands out for me. Here are some of my favorites.

Perceptual Table Tennis

A nice way to play the game without a real table and ball and ofcouse from your drawing or study room.

Gestroid
This one looks like a very basic game where you control space craft with hand movement and shoot missiles with thumb up signal.

Perceptual Brainboard
Looks like a board game. However the design is perfect to suite finger driven input. Looks very promising.

Puppets of Myth
You sure want to see 3d action games with Perceptual Computing. This is one of the kind of action game that you would love to play. Ina Centeur brings a nice little game for us. You can also download the game and enjoy it.

There are some other good entries that you might want to check up like:
1. Terminal Velocity
2. Perceptual Driving
3.Perceptual Breakout
4.Brain board

Do tell us your favorite and also refer us any entry that we might have missed.

Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge Gaming Entries with Object Tracking
Imagine that you can actually pick up a toy gun for a shooting game or a dummy steering for a racing game. Imagine a stick fighting with real sticks. Yes, it is possible with perceptual computing. Even though not too many developers has been seen attempting them, Mega Shaun seems to have got a good hold of this technology. The developer is found to be a lone entrant in this segment and I must tell you that the prototypes promises a lot. Here are some of the entries:

Virtual Reality Car Racing

VR Pool Foosball

So you basically pickup any objects, train the system about it and go play your game. Absolute fun.

Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge Gaming Entries with Head Tracking
What is your natural reaction to excitement in games? Jumping and Pumping and moving your heads and body. Remember Temple Run with guy running around ? You can control the run with swipes and movement of the device? Head tracking promises a lot of realistic experience in this direction. You play the game and move around and the game reacts to it automatically. That gives you some excitement! Unfortunately in this segment also we found fewer entries than we had expected.

Escape

Whenever I see this video I feel like playing the game. It is amazing the way developer has controlled the scene. seems like a temple run but faster and more intuitive. A model object like a running Character would have added few more spices to it.

HeadRacer

This is my personal favorite in this segment, because I developed this game Big Grin
This was fun making the game and also always a fun playing it. What separates it from other concept is that it integrates Head Tracking into gaming rather than controlling the entire game through Head tracking. So you play the game naturally and then the game reacts to your reaction.

Another entry which looks promising is a aqua explorer ( even though not a game).

Marine Acquarium

Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge Gaming Entries with Augmented Reality
An Augmented reality is one where you put the player or person in the scene. So the rendered scene is a mix of Virtual Reality and Reality. You find yourself to be in the scene against all virtual objects and morphing. We found couple of interesting games in this segment.

Perceptual Chess

This must be my favorite. The way developer is playing the game looks amazing with 3D and pure visual pleasure.

GesCard

This was developed by me with cooperation from my good friend Dave Kerr. I added Virtual Reality to a MVVM wpf game whose engine was developed and released as Open Source by Dave Kerr.
You can read more about the development of the MVVM game from this code project article.

Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge Entries in Social Networking
Well Perceptual Computing is a cool stuff and so is social hangout in web. So one would expect some real cool applications being made to give you that awesome experience in social networking. Youtube, twitter, facebook and all those great social networking sites when presented with pinch of perceptual input does give a sense of 'WOW'.

There were fewer entries in this segment but had some really good one. We found an App for all three major Social Networking Integration: twitter, facebook and youtube.

3d Browser

Developer has integrated twitter in a very nice way and the experience seems to be quite wonderful. However I did not get a chance to try it out.

Following are our entries for the contest with one giving you a Tom Cruise style experience with you tube and the other one my favourite of image processing on facebook images.

GesImage is my personal favorite as it has several unique features from slide show to custom gestures, finger tracking, hand movement tracking and many.

GesYou

Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge Entries in 3D Modelling
With perceptual computing, the first thing you would want to do as a developer is to create a modelling software. You can take a virtual 3d object, rotate, and change it's shape with hand, fingers , face and all. This was a segment that saw many good entries and one of my personal favorite Sculptus

Here are some of the selective entries that we could found and discovered.

Sculptus

You need to watch this video to understand what can be done with this technology. The developer seems to be taking full control of the experience factor and presents a virtual modelling software never experienced before.

Mercury

Interestingly I came to know that the developer received his camera just in time ( a day before the submission deadline). Keeping this in mind what he had to present is simply awesome. The work also presents interesting scenario with different lighting which looks unique.

GesModello

I really wanted to do many things with this one but ran out of time at the end. However extracting the entire depth map data from image and convert it to 3d object was really an experience in itself.

Gesture Clay

Another contribution from Ina. This one however looks a little unfinished in comparison to first two. But you never know the real experience unless you have used it.

Another similar entry was Ges3Draw. It is our entry but really failed to pass the QA check for this thread Tongue

Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge Entries for App and Desktop Control
This segment was expected to see many applications and did ended up with one of the most tried out segment by developers. With different gestures readily available, you expected developers to try controlling several apps through Gestures and boy they did it. This segment is also an interesting one for me personally as I have put up a lot of work in this segment. It calls for device level programming, attaching behavior to existing applications and therefore are always fun. So we present the applications that did not really designed anything substantially new but gave you nice control over your existing Apps.

GesTop

Perceptual Photo Viewer

GesMap

Primitive 3d

Perceptual Slide Show

Map Gesture

Extreme Interaction

Net Express

I had missed out this one. A very innovative entry for controlling the browser. I am thankful to Shyam, the publisher of this app to share the url for this thread.

There are quite a few other entries which we could not track or take notice due to lack of proper keywords or presentations.

Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge Entries in Gesture to Text Conversion
I won't say crowded, but really had discovered some good entries in this segment. This is another area that I feel has huge potential. Perceptual computing does give you power to communicate with gestures without speaking or typing. This is a power that must be taken seriously as there are several disabilities and situations which demands perceptual writing.

This is the area where I myself have worked a bit due to my pure fascination for Pattern Recognition. Seeing a gesture converted to text gives an immense pleasure beyond imagination.

Fingerspelling

HedTexter

Morsify

GesCal

Some of the other application that you can check out are:

Digital Black Board

Finger Counting
